BOLASHAK GRADUATE PRODUCES A FIVE-PART DOCUMENTARY FILM DEDICATED TO THE KUNAYEV ERA

Aliya Ashim, a graduate of the Boston University School of Communications, journalist, blogger, and filmmaker, has produced a historical documentary film about the formation of Kazakh history, the rise of the nomenclature in power, and the development of culture and art in Kazakhstan from 1960 to 1989. The five-part film is based on the study of the country’s transformation and development through the lens of one individual.

The Bolashak scholar aimed to shed light on historically significant events such as the land struggle in southern Kazakhstan, the creation of a German autonomy in Tselinograd, and the December events. The first three episodes of the documentary «Қонаев дәуірі» were released on the Q.rec productions YouTube channel last week. The second episode garnered nearly 50,000 views within one week. The five-part film explores myths, weighs the facts, discusses political disagreements and mistakes made by Kunayev, and narrates the rich history of Kazakhstan.

When asked where the idea for the film originated, Aliya shared her thoughts with the «7010 PODCAST» YouTube channel. Questions about the emergence of fanaticism in our society began to arise in her mind.

«Why did Kazakhstanis come to love Kunayev?» Aliya asked herself.

The first reference came from a segment in the Irina Kairatovna music video, depicting Kunayev’s visit to southern Kazakhstan.

«The image of Kunayev left a positive impression on me», - the journalist shares. Ashim admitted that she previously knew nothing about Kunayev.

«Sometimes I want to set everything aside and dive headfirst into science. But then I comfort myself with the thought that I came to documentary filmmaking to study our recent history until I reach the truth», writes Ashim on her Instagram page (translated from Kazakh).

It should be noted that Aliya Ashim won the Bolashak international scholarship in 2017 to study for a master’s degree in Journalism and Communication Management. In 2021, she graduated from Boston University (USA) with an MA in Journalism. On her personal page, Aliya shares tips on learning English, writes about giving birth in the USA, and tells fascinating stories from her life.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Bolashak international scholarship! The primary goal of the program is to prepare highly qualified personnel for the national economy. More than 12,500 graduates work for the benefit of the country in all sectors: government administration, medicine, the agro-industrial sector, and many other crucial areas that ensure the growth of the national economy.
