FROM DNA EDITING TO CANCER PROTECTION: HOW KAZAKH SCIENTISTS ARE IMPLEMENTING NEW TECHNOLOGIES

Six researchers from Kazakhstan have completed their ten-month scientific internships under the «500 visiting scholars» program in the United Kingdom. They focused on biotechnological research. The «500 visiting scholars» scientific internships were organized by the Sustainable Biotechnology Group and the Genomic Engineering Laboratory of the School of Life Sciences at the University of Westminster in London.

Kazakh researchers Aknur Turgumbayeva, Asem Kalikova, Elmira Kartbayeva, Gulnaz Seitimova, Gulzira Vasilina, and Serzhan Mombekov, recipients of the «500 visiting scholars» scientific internships, dedicated their time to studying green innovations, research processes, bioengineering, and the vulnerabilities of human diseases. Each of them worked on individual projects alongside leading scientists in the UK.

Dr. Serzhan Mombekov and Dr. Asem Kalikova investigated the impact of environmental factors on cancer development using CRISPR technology (a revolutionary genome-editing technology that allows for precise changes to DNA, adapted for use in human cells).

Dr. Elmira Kartbayeva developed methods for analyzing medicinal plants, while Dr. Aknur Turgumbayeva researched the production of biodegradable polymers for medical purposes. Dr. Gulzira Vasilina explored the potential for producing bioethanol from waste, and Dr. Gulnaz Seitimova worked on the enzymatic production of lovastatin (a drug that lowers cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases).

The work of the Kazakh scientists was highly praised by their British colleagues. Dr. Kalpana Surendranath and Dr. Godfrey Kyazze, the program organizers, noted the dedication and contributions of the Kazakh researchers to science. This scientific internship program supports the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, such as Good Health and Well-Being, Affordable and Clean Energy, and Climate Action.
