Journalist Duisenali Alimakyn, who is studying «Journalism. Public Relations. Communication Management» in Washington, D.C., through the Bolashak program, has made a significant discovery. While gathering historical data about Kazakhstan in Washington's libraries and archives, he found more than 20 old books and paintings over the course of a month. One particularly valuable artifact was recently discovered in the library of George Washington University. This artifact is a book titled «Councils in Central Asia», published in 1951 in New York by British researchers Zelda Coates and William Coates. The book discusses the situation of the Soviet Union's allied republics, with a section dedicated to Kazakhstan. It describes the history of the city of Almaty, its beauty with high mountains, lush flowers, and over 140 types of trees. The book also notes that in 1946, approximately 10,000 students were studying in the city.
– «The book is valuable because it contains a photograph of Kazakh national poet and zhyrchi Zhambyl Zhabaev, which is not available in Kazakhstan. The book first discusses the works of Abai, his place in the spiritual life of the Kazakh people, and then Zhambyl. It notes that at the time of Zhambyl Zhabaev's birth, Kazakh literature was not yet fully developed. It highlights the role of the great zhyrchi in the development of Kazakh literature and art», - said Duisenali Alimakyn.
The researchers wrote that Zhambyl's poetic talent became the pride of the entire Kazakh nation. He wrote over half a million poems and quoted them. The photograph of Zhambyl Zhabaev is labeled as «Kazakhstan's national poet Zhambyl».
– «After finding this photograph in the Washington library, we contacted Zhambyl's descendants. The poet's granddaughter was thrilled with the photograph and mentioned that such a photo does not exist in Kazakhstan; another version is preserved there. The photograph in the U.S. is clear and shows the faces of people sitting next to Zhambyl. There was even a request to bring it to our museum. Zhambyl’s granddaughter, Saltanat Tezekbaevna, director of the Zhambyl Zhabaev Museum, provided information about the people depicted in the photograph», said Duisenali Alimakyn.
The photograph shows, on the left, Zhambyl's literary secretary Gali Ormanov. Lying on the ground in a white shirt is translator Pavel Kuznetsov, the person sitting behind him is Kadir Khasenov, who translated many of the poet's verses into Uyghur and Chinese. On the right is Tezekbay Zhambylovich, and on the doorstep of the yurt is Zhambyl's grandson, Dildakhan.
– «The book first discusses the production, economic, social, agricultural, and livestock sectors of Kazakhstan, and then features a photograph of a Kazakh female combine harvester from the 'Red Combine' team. This is a true reflection of a Kazakh woman of that time. The name Kudiash Aunemosova is also mentioned. In scientific works published in the U.S., researchers reference each image and sentence, indicating the document from which it was obtained. The photographs in this book lack such references. It seems that the researchers took these pictures themselves. In any case, the photograph is a significant find of valuable facts about Kazakhs in the American capital», said Duisenali Alimakyn.
