Akerke Toleugazykyzy, a lecturer at Kazakh Agrotechnical Research University named after S. Seifullin, a PhD holder, and a 2024 scholarship recipient of the «500 visiting scholars» program. She is currently interning at the Center for Science and Education on Anaerobic Fermentation (ADREC) at Michigan State University (MSU), USA. ADREC is renowned for its pioneering work in producing high-value products through advanced organic waste processing.
My internship spans 8 months. During this time, I plan to master the necessary methods and techniques for the implementation of research work on the topic: «Studying the features of parallel production of high-cost products, such as biomethane, from sugar production waste.» I will also participate in scientific seminars and workshops related to my research topic.
Kazakhstan is among the top ten countries with significant organic waste pollution. A large portion of this waste is discarded without recycling, leading to considerable environmental damage and depletion of renewable resources. Therefore, addressing the processing of organic waste and producing high-value products is crucial for Kazakhstan, which is why I chose this research area.
Yes, I am leading a project titled «Development of an Integrated Bioconversion System for Carbon-Containing Waste», funded by the Science Committee. This project investigates methods for producing biosutec and biomethane from organic waste. The goal is to enable enterprises to create high-tech products from waste and utilize energy products for their operations, addressing the challenge of large-scale waste recycling and increasing product value.
After her research internship in the United States, Akerke plans to continue her research and apply for a postdoctoral fellowship. She believes that contributing to the development of domestic science is crucial and sees it as her way of repaying the support she received while studying abroad.
